At Vivero Growers nursery in southwest Austin, huge containers are planted as eye-catching showpieces. I oohed and aahed over them, together with this one with hot-pink ice plant and a large hesperaloe, throughout a latest go to.
Scorching pink ice plant flowers
Examine this one out: a potted Mexican grass tree — like a shimmering fiber-optic sphere!
Lantana mounds on this container, with flowers as sizzling because the Texas solar.
A cooler combo — chocolatey-purple pennisetum and silver ponyfoot — make a hammered-silver pairing.
Vivero has some new-to-me salvias, which I drooled over: ‘Plum Loopy’ (left) and ‘Blue Chill’ (proper). They appear terrific collectively, particularly paired with a burgundy Japanese maple. I couldn’t assist pondering, although, that the maple would need shade in our sizzling local weather whereas the salvias would need solar. It really works for staging although!

Bees prefer it too.
I’m plumb loopy for ‘Plum Loopy’ salvia.
Outdoors the succulent greenhouses, a container bursting with slipper plant, silver ponyfoot, and one thing flowering sizzling pink — pelargonium? — caught my eye.
I’m a sucker for every kind of prickly pear, particularly ‘Santa Rita’ with violet pads and yellow flowers.
Ooh, ‘Silver Greenback’ prickly pear, with spherical pads like Mickey Mouse silhouettes!
Tree cholla with a good-looking fuchsia flower
A prickly pear-like plant in a succulent trough additionally caught my eye. I believe it’s Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis.
The opposite succulents are fab too.
Within the shade space, I admired this good-looking planter with foxtail fern, variegated child solar rose, Mexican heather, and a burgundy-leaved one thing.
Vivero has smaller planters too, excellent for a porch desk.
They’ll make you content!
